Spit Roast – A Traditional Cooking Method That Is Sure To Be A Crowd Pleaser
What is a spit roast? Well, traditionally, the spit roast is what was used to cook large sections of meat. The big piece of meat was placed on a metal rod, and it was twisted to be cooked evenly over a fire. When it was roasted over the fire, this made the meat extra tasty as it was cooked in its own juices.
Way back during medieval times, the spit was the only way they could cook meat. The spit was still prominent in early modern indoor kitchens and was actually the favored way of cooking meat. It was a very labor intensive way of cooking meat, though. During these times, a young servant boy or girl would stand at the roast, turning the handle all throughout the day to make sure that the meat was cooked evenly. Usually a boy, this servant was referred to as a spit jack.
Over time mechanical turnspits were invented these mechanical turnspits are called roasting jacks. These mechanical roasts were first powered by dogs on a treadmill, then by steam power and mechanical clock works. Modern styles are powered by electric motors.
If you have a lot of people to feed, you might want to invest in a spit roast. Today, they are mostly used to cook large animals like goats or turkeys, and large pieces of beef. These spits, though, are usually only used on special occasions, because it makes the meat extra juicy and tender, making it appropriate for high class events.
Traditionally in the west an entire cow was placed on a spit roast to cook. An image of cowboys around an open fire roasting a large slab of meat is commonly associated with the west. Of course today that practice is not quite as common. There are services available that specialize in providing a roast for special events. Typically the food is par cooked off site than the remainder of the cooking is done at the event.
For many countries worldwide, the spit roast is still preferred over other cooking methods. It’s still very popular worldwide, but it is the favored way of cooking in the Middle East, as well as Greece for cooking goats for the former and lamb for the latter. It is one of the world’s top cooking methods because the process is so slow that it leaves the meat juicy and tender. When large family gatherings occur, in many countries, the roasting will begin, as it is a great way to spend the entire day together, around a fire, watching your meal be cooked.
There is no better way to make succulent and tasty meat than on a spit roast pit. This type of cooking is timeless and provides a unique way to experience your favorite foods.
